How to Clean a Crystal Chandelier
Crystal chandeliers lose their sparkle as dust and kitchen or city grime settle on every facet. As chandelier manufacturers in Delhi, we get asked how to clean them safely all the time. Here is the method we recommend for cleaning a crystal chandelier in place, without taking it apart.
What you need
- Two pairs of lint-free cotton gloves
- Microfibre cloths or a feather duster
- Spray bottle with isopropyl alcohol and distilled water (1:3)
- A stable step ladder and a thick towel for the floor
Step-by-step cleaning

Switch off and cool down
Turn off the chandelier at the switch and at the MCB. Wait at least 20 minutes so the bulbs and metal are completely cool. Never clean a chandelier that is still powered.

Protect the floor and set up safely
Spread a thick towel or blanket under the fixture to catch drips and cushion any crystal that slips. Use a stable step ladder, and have a second person hold it for large or high fixtures.

Remove bulbs and dust first
Take out the bulbs and wipe them separately with a dry cloth. Use a soft microfibre cloth or a feather duster to remove loose dust from the frame and crystals, working from the top down.

Mix a gentle cleaning solution
In a spray bottle, mix one part isopropyl alcohol with three parts distilled water. Distilled water avoids white mineral spots. Do not use ammonia, bleach or abrasive cleaners — they can dull crystal and damage plated finishes.

Clean each crystal in place
Spray the solution onto a lint-free cotton glove or cloth — never directly onto the fixture or the sockets. Wear one damp glove to wipe each crystal and one dry glove to buff it straight away. This “two-glove” method cleans without dismantling.

Wipe the frame
Wipe the metal arms and canopy with a barely damp cloth, then dry immediately. For gold, brass or chrome plating, dry buffing is enough; moisture left on joints can tarnish the finish.

Dry completely, then restore power
Let the chandelier air-dry for at least an hour, and make sure sockets are fully dry. Refit the bulbs, then switch on to check for streaks and touch up with a dry glove.
Maintenance schedule
Mistakes to avoid
- Spraying cleaner directly onto the fixture — liquid can run into sockets and wiring.
- Twisting the chandelier while cleaning — it can loosen the ceiling mount.
- Using paper towels — they leave lint and can scratch coated crystal.
- Removing many crystals without noting their positions — photograph the layout first.
